Honda Confirms First Electric Vehicle Launch in India by FY27

Honda FY27

Honda FY27 Cars India is gearing up to enter the electric vehicle (EV) market with its first all-electric model, set to debut between April 2026 and March 2027. Kunal Behl, Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Honda Cars India, confirmed the timeline, marking a significant shift for the Japanese automaker, which has so far focused on strong hybrid models in India. While competitors like Hyundai, Tata, and Mahindra already offer EVs, and Maruti Suzuki and Toyota are preparing their electric models for launch within months, Hondaโ€™s entry will bring fresh competition to the growing EV segment.

A New Electric SUV, Not an Elevate EV

Speculation previously pointed to an electric version of the Honda Elevate SUV as the brandโ€™s first EV in India. However, both Kunal Behl and Takashi Nakajima, President and CEO of Honda Cars India, have clarified that the upcoming EV will not be based on the Elevate. Instead, Honda is developing a brand-new midsize SUV, designed to rival models like the Hyundai Creta EV, MG ZS EV, and Maruti Suzuki e Vitara. This fresh nameplate approach sets Honda apart from competitors who often electrify existing ICE models, signaling a bold strategy to make a distinct mark in the EV space.

Charging Infrastructure and Buyer Confidence

Honda is laying the groundwork for a seamless EV ownership experience by investing in charging infrastructure. The company is equipping its dealerships with fast-charging DC stations to ensure buyers can charge their electric SUV quickly and conveniently, minimizing range anxiety. This proactive step aims to have a robust charging network in place by the time the EV hits Indian roads in late 2026, offering buyers peace of mind and practical usability.

Hondaโ€™s Current Lineup and Future Plans

Currently, Honda Cars India offers a compact lineup, including four petrol modelsโ€”City, Amaze, Elevate, and the outgoing Amazeโ€”along with the City e:HEV strong-hybrid and CNG variants of the Amaze and Elevate. Unlike its rivals, Hondaโ€™s portfolio is relatively small, having phased out models like the Brio, Jazz, Mobilio, and CR-V due to low sales. The upcoming EV will expand Hondaโ€™s offerings, bringing a modern, eco-friendly option to its Indian customers.

Beyond the EV, Honda is also developing the next-generation City sedan, expected to debut in 2028. Built on the new PF2 platform, this model will support a hybrid powertrain and be highly localized for India, targeting a competitive price range of Rs. 15 lakh to Rs. 25 lakh (ex-showroom). Unlike the current City e:HEV, which starts at Rs. 19.90 lakh, the new City aims to offer affordability without compromising on technology or performance.

Why Hondaโ€™s EV Matters

Hondaโ€™s entry into Indiaโ€™s EV market signals its commitment to sustainable mobility and aligns with the countryโ€™s push for greener transportation. By introducing a dedicated electric SUV and investing in charging infrastructure, Honda is positioning itself to compete with established players while catering to the evolving preferences of Indian buyers. The decision to launch a new model, rather than electrifying an existing one, reflects Hondaโ€™s innovative approach to capturing the growing EV segment.

With its first EV set to launch by FY27, Honda invites buyers to stay tuned for a stylish, tech-packed midsize SUV that promises to deliver performance, efficiency, and convenience.
