A new electric midsize SUV, the BYD Atto 2, is set to enter the Indian automotive market, positioning itself as a competitor to models like the Hyundai Creta EV. Recently seen testing on Indian roads, this China-manufactured vehicle from BYD signals an upcoming launch, likely within the next few months. As BYD imports its vehicles directly from China without local production, the Atto 2 is expected to carry a price tag of approximately Rs 35 lakh (ex-showroom).
Premium Features and Modern Design
The BYD Atto 2, already available in markets like the UK, boasts an impressive array of features. It includes a 12.8-inch rotatable touchscreen infotainment display, wireless charging for smartphones, an advanced eight-speaker audio system, and voice-activated controls with BYDโs โHi BYDโ technology. The SUV also offers 17-inch alloy wheels and vehicle-to-load (V2L) functionality, allowing it to power external devices. These high-end features are anticipated to be included in the Indian version, making it a luxurious option in its segment.
Dimensions and Market Positioning
Measuring 4,310 mm long, 1,830 mm wide, and 1,675 mm tall, with a wheelbase of 2,620 mm, the Atto 2 is comparable in size to rivals like the Hyundai Creta, Tata Harrier, and MG ZS EV. However, its estimated price of Rs 35 lakh places it in a higher bracket compared to competitors, which are priced between Rs 20-30 lakh. This premium pricing could pose a challenge for BYD in capturing a significant share of the competitive Indian midsize SUV market.
Cutting-Edge Battery Technology
The Atto 2 introduces BYDโs innovative Blade Battery with cell-to-body (CTB) technology, a first for the brandโs midsize SUVs. In global markets, it is offered with two battery options: a 51.1 kWh pack delivering a range of 344 km (WLTP) and a 64.8 kWh pack offering up to 420 km. Both variants achieve 0-100 kmph in 7.9 seconds and have a top speed of 160 kmph. The Indian model is likely to feature the 51.1 kWh battery, producing 174 bhp and 290 Nm of torque, while the larger 64.8 kWh option generates 201 bhp and 310 Nm.
Charging and Practicality
The 51.1 kWh battery supports fast charging with an 82kW DC charger, reaching 30-80% capacity in just 30 minutes. The larger 64.8 kWh battery, paired with a 155kW DC charger, achieves the same charge level in 21 minutes. For slower charging, a standard 11kW 3-phase AC charger fully charges the 51.1 kWh battery in 5 hours and 42 minutes, while the 64.8 kWh battery takes 7 hours and 12 minutes. With a boot space of 400 litres, expandable to 1,340 litres by folding the rear seats, the Atto 2 offers ample practicality for a 5-seater electric SUV.

Launch Timeline and Market Expectations
BYD India registered a design patent for the Atto 2 in May 2024, and company officials have confirmed plans for a midsize electric SUV launch by the end of 2025. The recent sightings of the vehicle on Indian roads suggest that the debut is approaching. While the Atto 2โs premium features and advanced technology make it a strong contender, its higher price point compared to rivals may require strategic marketing to ensure success in Indiaโs price-sensitive market.
