Hyundai India reclaimed its position as the second-largest automaker in the Indian domestic market in August 2025, overtaking Mahindra with a total of 44,001 vehicles sold. This marks a notable achievement despite an 11% year-on-year (YoY) decline compared to 49,525 units sold in August 2024. On a month-on-month basis, Hyundaiโ€™s performance remained steady, with sales nearly matching the 43,973 units sold in July 2025. The companyโ€™s ability to secure the second spot highlights its strong market presence, driven by a diverse portfolio led by the Creta SUV.

Creta Leads the Charge

The Hyundai Creta continued its dominance, selling 15,924 units in August 2025, making it the third best-selling vehicle in India for the month. Despite a 5% YoY drop from 16,762 units in August 2024, the Cretaโ€™s consistent performance, regularly surpassing 15,000 units monthly, underscores its popularity among Indian buyers. Its blend of style, features, and reliability keeps it ahead in the competitive SUV segment.

Venue Prepares for a Comeback

The Hyundai Venue, a compact SUV, recorded sales of 8,109 units in August 2025, down 11% from 9,085 units in August 2024. With a next-generation model set to launch on October 24, 2025, the Venue is expected to see a surge in demand. The upcoming version promises advanced technology, a premium design, and benefits from the 2025 GST reforms, which have reduced prices, making it more appealing to buyers.

Aura Shines with Strong Growth

The Hyundai Aura sedan posted impressive growth, with 5,336 units sold in August 2025, a 24% YoY increase from 4,304 units in August 2024. Available in petrol and CNG variants, the Aura competes with models like the Maruti Suzuki Dzire, Honda Amaze, and Tata Tigor. The recent GST 2.0 price reductions have significantly boosted its appeal, driving higher sales in the subcompact sedan segment.

Exter Holds Steady, Hatchbacks Struggle

The Hyundai Exter, another compact SUV, sold 5,061 units in August 2025, reflecting a 24% YoY decline from 6,632 units in August 2024. Meanwhile, Hyundaiโ€™s hatchback lineup faced challenges. The Grand i10 sold 3,908 units (down 27% from 5,365 units), and the i20 recorded 3,634 units (down 26% from 4,913 units). The declining sales of these hatchbacks may be due to their aging designs and features, which struggle to compete with more modern rivals.

Alcazar, Verna, and Tucson Face Headwinds

The Hyundai Alcazar, a 7-seater SUV, saw a modest 7% YoY growth, with 1,187 units sold in August 2025 compared to 1,105 units in August 2024. However, the Verna midsize sedan continued its downward trend, with only 771 units sold, a 35% drop from 1,194 units in August 2024. The Tucson SUV performed even worse, with just 57 units sold, down 54% from 125 units in August 2024, reflecting limited demand for premium SUVs in the current market.

Ioniq 5 Sales Dip, Facelift Awaited

The Ioniq 5 electric sedan saw a sharp 65% YoY decline, with only 14 units sold in August 2025 compared to 40 units in August 2024. However, Hyundai is gearing up to launch a facelifted Ioniq 5 in February 2026, which could revive interest in the electric vehicle segment.

Upcoming Launches to Boost Hyundaiโ€™s Lineup

Hyundai India is poised for growth with several new models in the pipeline. The next-generation Venue, launching on October 24, 2025, will bring a fresh design and advanced features. The Ioniq 5 facelift, expected in February 2026, aims to strengthen Hyundaiโ€™s electric vehicle offerings. Additionally, a new compact electric SUV based on the Inster is slated for release in late 2026, targeting the growing demand for affordable EVs.

Conclusion

Hyundaiโ€™s August 2025 performance reflects a mix of strengths and challenges. The Creta and Aura continue to drive sales, while the upcoming Venue and other new models signal a promising future. Despite declines in some segments, Hyundaiโ€™s strategic launches and the benefits of GST reforms position it well to maintain its competitive edge in Indiaโ€™s dynamic automotive market.
