Hyundai has revealed exciting plans to introduce a brand-new compact electric SUV in India by 2027, aiming to shake up the market currently led by the Tata Punch EV. Announced during Hyundaiโ€™s first-ever CEO Investor Day held outside South Korea, this upcoming electric vehicle (EV) is designed specifically for Indian consumers. It will serve as Hyundaiโ€™s entry-level electric model, tailored with India-focused styling and features, and built using a localized supply chain to ensure affordability and efficiency.

A Fresh Approach to Electric Mobility

Unlike Hyundaiโ€™s existing electric offerings in India, such as the Creta EV and Ioniq 5, this compact e-SUV will not be an electrified version of an existing model. Instead, it will be a completely new creation, built from the ground up with a unique identity. Drawing inspiration from Hyundaiโ€™s global design philosophy, it is expected to sport a modern, sleek look that aligns with the brandโ€™s latest international models. While specifics remain limited, industry experts speculate it may share technical underpinnings with the Kia Syros EV and could be based on the K1 platform used in the Hyundai Inster, a compact electric SUV sold in Europe.

Packed with Premium Features

Hyundai is set to position this compact e-SUV as a premium yet accessible option in the A+ segment. The vehicle is likely to boast a high-end interior equipped with cutting-edge technology. Anticipated features include a large touchscreen infotainment system, a panoramic sunroof, and ventilated seats for enhanced comfort in Indiaโ€™s warm climate. Safety will also be a priority, with expectations of six airbags as standard across all variants. Additionally, the SUV could be the first in its class to offer Level 2 Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and a 360-degree camera, setting a new benchmark for compact EVs in India.

Performance and Range

To keep costs competitive, the Hyundai compact e-SUV is expected to share its powertrain with the upcoming Kia Syros EV. This includes two battery options: a 42 kWh pack offering an estimated range of 300 km and a larger 49 kWh pack delivering up to 355 km on a single charge. The vehicle will feature a front-wheel-drive configuration, making it a practical and efficient choice for urban and suburban driving. Positioned below the Tata Nexon EV and Mahindra XUV400 in the market, it will directly challenge the Tata Punch EV with a potentially lower price point, thanks to Hyundaiโ€™s strategic pricing approach.

Strengthening Hyundaiโ€™s EV Lineup in India

Hyundai currently offers two electric models in India: the Creta EV and the premium Ioniq 5. The company discontinued the Kona EV in 2023 but is now expanding its electric portfolio with the upcoming Venue EV, Grand i10 Nios EV, and this new compact e-SUV. By leveraging local manufacturing and supply chains, Hyundai aims to make its EVs more affordable and accessible to Indian buyers, while also catering to the growing demand for sustainable mobility.

A Bold Step Toward Electric Dominance

With its India-centric design, advanced features, and competitive pricing, Hyundaiโ€™s compact electric SUV is poised to make a significant impact in the Indian EV market. By 2027, it could redefine the A+ segment, offering a compelling alternative to the Tata Punch EV and solidifying Hyundaiโ€™s position as a key player in Indiaโ€™s electric vehicle revolution.
