Maruti Suzuki India Limited (MSIL) has embarked on a groundbreaking journey by initiating exports of its first Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV), the e Vitara, to Europe. In August 2025, the company dispatched over 2,900 units from Pipavav Port in Gujarat to 12 European nations, including the United Kingdom, Germany, Norway, France, Denmark, Switzerland, Netherlands, Sweden, Hungary, Iceland, Austria, and Belgium. This milestone underscores Maruti Suzukiโs ambition to position India as a global powerhouse for electric vehicle production, aligning with the โMake in India, Make for the Worldโ vision.
A Landmark Event in Hansalpur
The export launch follows a significant event on August 26, 2025, at Maruti Suzukiโs Hansalpur manufacturing facility in Gujarat, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the production of the e Vitara. He praised Maruti Suzuki as a champion of the โMake in Indiaโ initiative, highlighting its role in elevating Indiaโs status in the global automotive industry. The e Vitara, exclusively produced at the Hansalpur plant, is built on Suzukiโs innovative HEARTECT-e platform, designed specifically for electric vehicles to deliver superior performance, safety, and efficiency.
Global Aspirations and Domestic Plans
The e Vitara is set to make waves far beyond India, with plans to export the vehicle to over 100 countries worldwide. Simultaneously, Maruti Suzuki is preparing to introduce the e Vitara to the Indian market, where it will be sold through its premium Nexa dealership network. The model, a five-seater midsize SUV, has already garnered international attention, having been showcased in Milan, Italy, and at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo in New Delhi earlier in 2025. With two battery options offering a driving range exceeding 500 kilometers on a single charge, the e Vitara is poised to appeal to both domestic and global consumers seeking advanced electric mobility.
Leadership Perspective on the Milestone
Hisashi Takeuchi, Managing Director and CEO of Maruti Suzuki India Limited, expressed immense pride in the achievement, stating, โThe Prime Ministerโs acknowledgment of Maruti Suzuki as a โMake in Indiaโ ambassador is a profound honor. Exporting the e Vitara to Europe marks a historic moment for us. To captivate customers across more than 100 countries, our vehicle must excel in technology, design, safety, and performance. The e Vitara, crafted on our cutting-edge HEARTECT-e platform, embodies these qualities and promises an exhilarating driving experience.โ
Advancing Indiaโs EV Ecosystem
In a parallel development, Maruti Suzukiโs subsidiary, TDS Lithium-ion Battery Gujarat, has achieved a pioneering feat by starting local production of lithium-ion cells and electrodes. This makes it the first company in India to achieve electrode-level localization, significantly reducing reliance on imported components for hybrid and electric vehicles. The locally produced batteries will initially power Maruti Suzukiโs strong hybrid SUVs, beginning with the popular Grand Vitara, marking a transformative step toward self-reliance in Indiaโs EV and hybrid ecosystem.
