Maruti Suzuki, Indiaโs leading automaker, has embarked on a transformative journey with the production launch of its inaugural electric SUV, the e Vitara, at its cutting-edge facility in Hansalpur, Gujarat. This milestone, celebrated alongside the debut of Indiaโs first domestically manufactured lithium-ion battery cells and electrodes for hybrid vehicles, underscores a bold step toward self-reliance in Indiaโs automotive sector. The event, graced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, Japanโs Ambassador to India Keiichi Ono, and Suzuki Motor Corporationโs leadership, including President Toshihiro Suzuki, marks a historic moment for Indiaโs green mobility ambitions.
A Trailblazing Electric SUV for Global Markets
The e Vitara, built on a specialized skateboard EV platform, is set to redefine Indiaโs role in the global automotive landscape. Production has commenced, with the first consignment of these electric SUVs scheduled for export this month from Gujaratโs Pipavav port to key European markets, including the United Kingdom, Germany, Norway, France, and the Netherlands. Maruti Suzuki aims for the e Vitara to lead as Indiaโs most extensively mass-produced and exported electric vehicle, positioning the country as a hub for advanced automotive manufacturing.
This midsize electric SUV will offer two battery options, with the larger pack delivering an impressive driving range exceeding 500 kilometers on a single charge. Equipped with fast-charging capabilities, the e Vitara is designed to meet the demands of eco-conscious drivers worldwide, blending performance with sustainability.
Revolutionizing Battery Production in India
In a parallel breakthrough, Maruti Suzukiโs subsidiary, TDS Lithium-ion Battery Gujarat, has achieved a landmark by initiating local production of lithium-ion cells and electrodes. This makes Maruti Suzuki the first company in India to localize electrode manufacturing, reducing reliance on imported components for hybrid electric vehicles. These homegrown batteries will power Maruti Suzukiโs strong hybrid SUVs, starting with the widely acclaimed Grand Vitara, enhancing efficiency and affordability in Indiaโs hybrid vehicle market.
A Legacy of Investment and Innovation
Suzukiโs commitment to Indiaโs automotive ecosystem is profound, with investments surpassing one lakh crore rupees and generating over 11 lakh direct jobs across the supply chain. Since its inception in 2017, the Hansalpur plant has been a powerhouse, achieving a remarkable milestone earlier this year as Suzukiโs fastest subsidiary to produce four million vehicles. The facility currently manufactures popular models like the Baleno, Swift, and Fronx, with the e Vitara now joining the lineup. A dedicated EV production facility, Plant D, is also in development, signaling Maruti Suzukiโs long-term commitment to electric mobility.
TDS Lithium-ion Battery Gujarat has been a key player since 2021, supplying mild hybrid batteries that have powered over a million vehicles. This robust infrastructure positions India to compete on the global stage, challenging the dominance of China, Europe, and the US in electric vehicle innovation.

Redefining Indiaโs Automotive Narrative
For decades, India has been viewed primarily as an assembly hub for global automotive giants. The e Vitara and localized battery production mark a paradigm shift, showcasing Indiaโs capability to design, manufacture, and export cutting-edge electric vehicles. With exports planned to over 100 countries, Maruti Suzuki is not only elevating Indiaโs automotive prowess but also contributing to global efforts toward sustainable transportation.
