Stellantis Set to Introduce Leapmotor Electric Vehicle in India

Stellantis, a global automotive giant, is gearing up to bring its Leapmotor electric vehicle (EV) brand to the Indian market as part of its worldwide expansion strategy. After successful launches in Europe, Southeast Asia, and other regions, India is the next destination for this Chinese-origin brand. The company first hinted at its India plans in a global statement in May 2024, followed by a local confirmation in April 2025. Recently, Shailesh Hazela, CEO & Managing Director of Stellantis India, shared fresh insights into the brandโ€™s roadmap for the country during a discussion with industry sources.

Launch Timeline and Model Strategy

According to Hazela, the first Leapmotor vehicle will hit Indian roads in the next financial year, between April 2026 and March 2027. Stellantis is eyeing two potential models for its debut: a B-segment vehicle and an entry-level C-segment model. Given Indiaโ€™s strong preference for SUVs, especially in higher price brackets, and the challenging road conditions, the Leapmotor C10 SUV appears to be a frontrunner. This model, showcased globally, measures 4,515 mm in length, 1,885 mm in width, and 1,655 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,735 mm. In markets like the UK, it boasts a 215 hp motor with 240 Nm of torque, paired with battery options of 56.2 kWh or 67.1 kWh, offering a WLTP range of 361 km and 434 km, respectively.

Alternatively, Hazelaโ€™s mention of a B-segment model might point to the Leapmotor T03, a compact A-segment hatchback. This smaller vehicle, measuring 3,620 mm long, 1,652 mm wide, and 1,577 mm tall with a 2,400-mm wheelbase, is equipped with a 94 hp motor and a 37.3 kWh battery, delivering a 265 km range in the UK. While the T03 is a practical urban EV, the C10โ€™s SUV styling and robust build make it a stronger fit for Indian buyers.

Premium Positioning in India

Unlike its positioning as an affordable EV brand in Europe, Stellantis plans to market Leapmotor as a premium offering in India. This shift is likely driven by the absence of local manufacturing plans, which would increase costs due to the import of Completely Knocked Down (CKD) kits for assembly. By focusing on the premium segment, Stellantis aims to appeal to discerning EV buyers seeking advanced features and modern design. The companyโ€™s decision to forego separate Leapmotor dealerships further suggests a cautious approach to volume expectations. Instead, Leapmotor vehicles will be sold through Stellantisโ€™ existing multi-brand showrooms, which already cater to Jeep and Citroen customers.

Dealer Network and EV Readiness

Stellantis is actively preparing its retail infrastructure for the Leapmotor launch. Hazela revealed that 50% of the companyโ€™s dealerships have already transitioned to multi-brand outlets capable of handling EV sales and services. With a current network of 110 showrooms, Stellantis plans to expand to 150 outlets within the next six months to strengthen its market presence. This strategic expansion underscores the companyโ€™s commitment to ensuring a seamless customer experience for its upcoming EV offerings.

Why the C10 SUV Makes Sense for India

The Leapmotor C10โ€™s dimensions, performance, and SUV styling align well with Indian market trends, where SUVs dominate the premium and mid-size segments. Its robust build is suited for Indiaโ€™s diverse road conditions, from urban streets to rural highways. Additionally, the C10โ€™s competitive range and powertrain options make it a compelling choice for buyers seeking eco-friendly yet practical vehicles. While the T03 hatchback could appeal to city dwellers, its smaller size and lower range may limit its appeal compared to the versatile C10.

A Strategic Move for Stellantis

By introducing Leapmotor in India, Stellantis is tapping into the countryโ€™s rapidly growing EV market. With a premium positioning, a focus on SUVs, and an expanding retail network, the company is poised to carve out a niche in the competitive Indian automotive landscape. As the launch window approaches, all eyes will be on Stellantis to see how Leapmotorโ€™s global appeal translates to Indian roads.
