Tata Motors is gearing up to dominate Indiaโs fiercely competitive sub-4-meter SUV market with the launch of three fresh compact SUVs by the end of this decade. These vehicles aim to solidify the brandโs foothold in a segment teeming with rivals, offering innovative designs, advanced features, and efficient powertrains tailored to Indian buyersโ needs. Hereโs an in-depth look at whatโs coming.
Festive Season Star
Set to debut this October during the vibrant festive season, the refreshed Tata Punch promises a bold makeover. Drawing inspiration from its electric sibling, the Punch.ev, the updated model will sport sleek, redesigned headlamps, a sculpted front bumper, and stylish 16-inch alloy wheels. Inside, expect a leap in tech with a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system replacing the current 7.0-inch display, alongside a larger driver information screen for enhanced usability.
The powertrain lineup remains familiar yet refined. The facelifted Punch will retain its 1.2-liter petrol and petrol-CNG engines, paired with a 5-speed manual or automated manual transmission. Notably, the CNG variant, previously limited to a manual gearbox, will now offer the 5-speed automated manual option, boosting convenience for eco-conscious drivers.
Next-Generation Nexon
In 2027, Tata Motors will introduce the second-generation Nexon, codenamed Garud, built on an evolved version of the X1 platform. This redesigned SUV will elevate the compact SUV game with cutting-edge features like a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a powered driverโs seat, and Level 2 Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). The familiar 1.2-liter petrol and petrol-CNG engines will power the vehicle, but the stricter BS7 emission norms may phase out the 1.5-liter diesel engine due to rising costs, ensuring affordability without compromising quality.
A Bold Sub-4-Meter Contender
Tata Motors is also crafting a rugged yet refined sub-4-meter SUV, internally dubbed Scarlet, expected to hit showrooms by 2028. Positioned as a compact counterpart to the next-gen Sierra, Scarlet will embrace a boxy, muscular aesthetic, reminiscent of off-road icons like the Mahindra Thar and Maruti Suzuki Jimny. Unlike its body-on-frame competitors, Scarletโs monocoque construction will prioritize on-road comfort, dynamic handling, and fuel efficiency, while still offering a bold stance.
With its monocoque platform, Scarlet is primed for a pure-electric version, potentially rivaling Kiaโs forthcoming Syros EV. Priced starting at approximately โน9.5 lakh (ex-showroom), this model will slot between the Nexon and Sierra, offering a versatile and premium option for urban adventurers.
