The midsize SUV market in India is buzzing with anticipation as three major automakers Tata Motors, Renault, and Nissan gear up to launch their brand-new offerings in 2026. This segment, known for its rapid growth and high profitability, is set to witness a fierce competition as these brands introduce vehicles packed with cutting-edge features, bold designs, and versatile powertrains. Hereโ€™s an exclusive look at whatโ€™s coming.

Tata Sierra: A Bold Leap into the Future

Tata Motors is ready to make waves with the highly anticipated Tata Sierra, set to debut in early 2026. This SUV marks Tataโ€™s grand entry into the midsize segment, filling a long-standing gap in its portfolio. Built on a versatile in-house platform that supports both internal combustion engines (ICE) and electric powertrains, the Sierra promises to cater to a wide range of buyers.

Showcased at Auto Expo 2025, the Sierra boasts a futuristic design and a host of premium features. Expect a striking interior with triple dashboard screens, a luxurious four-seat lounge option, and robust all-wheel-drive (AWD) capabilities. The Sierra.ev, an all-electric variant, will hit the market first, taking on competitors like the Hyundai Creta Electric and Maruti e Vitara. With dual motorsโ€”one for the front wheels and another for the rear when extra grip or power is neededโ€”the Sierra.ev will offer both two-wheel-drive (2WD) and AWD configurations.

For the ICE models, Tata is likely to equip the Sierra with a 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine delivering 170 horsepower and 275 Nm of torque, alongside a naturally aspirated version of the same engine. A 1.5-litre turbo diesel, producing 118 horsepower and 265 Nm of torque, will also be available. Transmission options may include a 6-speed manual or a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic, ensuring a smooth and engaging drive.

Renault Duster: Rugged Charm Meets Modern Sophistication

Renault is staging a grand comeback with the third-generation Duster, slated for release in the first quarter of 2026. After bypassing the second generation in India, the new Duster aims to recapture its past glory with a bold, rugged aesthetic and a tech-laden cabin.

Measuring 4.3 meters in length, 1.8 meters in width, and 1.7 meters in height, with a 2.7-meter wheelbase, the Duster offers a commanding presence. Its upgraded design includes sleek LED headlights, 18-inch alloy wheels, and a modern interior featuring a 7-inch digital driver display, a 10.1-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a suite of advanced driver assistance systems. However, it may lack a sunroof, a feature highly sought after in this segment.

The Duster will likely launch with two petrol engines: a 1.0-litre three-cylinder and a 1.3-litre four-cylinder turbo, paired with a 6-speed manual or a continuously variable transmission (CVT). An AWD option, already available globally, is expected to be offered in India. Renault also plans to introduce a hybrid variant within a year, targeting eco-conscious buyers seeking superior fuel efficiency.

Nissanโ€™s New Midsize SUV: A Fresh Identity

Nissan is set to re-enter the midsize SUV arena with a new model that succeeds the Terrano, expected shortly after the Dusterโ€™s launch in 2026. Unlike its predecessor, which closely resembled the Duster, this SUV will sport a distinct design inspired by the bold and muscular seventh-generation Nissan Patrol.

While the name remains under wraps, Nissanโ€™s upcoming SUV will share its engines and transmissions with the Renault Duster, including the 1.0-litre and 1.3-litre turbo petrol engines, along with manual and CVT options. An AWD system is also likely to be available. A hybrid powertrain is expected to join the lineup later, offering a blend of performance and efficiency.
