Toyota has rolled out an innovative electric shuttle named the e-Palette in Japan, priced at 29 million yen (roughly Rs. 1.74 crore). This zero-emission vehicle is designed to redefine urban mobility, with plans to integrate Level 4 autonomous driving capabilities in the near future. While the e-Palette currently operates with Level 2 automation, Toyota is actively working toward a hands-free Level 4 system, expected to hit the market between April 2026 and March 2027. The automaker is collaborating with dealerships, local governments, and autonomous driving technology partners to demonstrate and refine this advanced system.
A Versatile People Mover
The e-Palette is a purpose-built vehicle (PBV) crafted primarily for eco-friendly passenger transport, though its flexible design allows it to double as a mobile shop or service hub. In its standard layout, it comfortably seats four passengers, accommodates twelve standing, and includes a driver, totaling 17 occupants. Its boxy yet practical design maximizes interior space, making it ideal for urban commuting and specialized applications.
Spacious and Accessible Design
Measuring 4,950 mm in length, 2,080 mm in width, and 2,650 mm in height, the e-Palette is a sizable electric vehicle optimized for space efficiency. The cabin utilizes 2,865 mm of the length, 1,780 mm of the width, and 2,135 mm of the height, creating a roomy environment. Accessibility is a key focus, with a low floor height of 370 mm (adjustable to 270 mm) and expansive door openings (1,900 mm high and 1,280 mm wide), ensuring easy entry and exit, even for those with mobility challenges.
Powertrain and Performance
The e-Palette is powered by a 150 kW (201 hp) AC synchronous motor delivering 266 Nm of torque, paired with a 72.82 kWh battery pack. While Toyota hasnโt disclosed the batteryโs chemical composition, it supports fast charging, reaching 80% capacity in about 40 minutes using a 90 kW DC charger. The shuttle offers a range of approximately 250 km on a single charge, based on Japanโs WLTC testing standard, and can reach a top speed of 80 km/h.

Cost and Incentives
Priced at 29 million yen, the e-Palette qualifies for a substantial subsidy of 15.835 million yen (around Rs. 95 lakh) through Japanโs Ministry of the Environmentโs Commercial Vehicle Electrification Promotion Project. This reduces the effective cost to 13.165 million yen (approximately Rs. 79 lakh), making it a compelling option for businesses and municipalities.
